Exciting Partnership and New Book Help Citizens Become Aware of Disinformation

Dr. Erin Steuter, professor of sociology at Mount Allison University, teamed up with Moncton illustrator Alan Spinney to create Won’t Get Fooled Again: A Graphic Guide to Fake News. This graphic novel teaches readers all about fake news: what it is, where it comes from, how to check its accuracy, and how to avoid being tricked. Steuter has spent her career studying how misinformation spreads, and has commented on fake news in the past. Spinney is an oil painter with a background in cartooning and advertising layout. Together, they created a graphic novel that tells stories about regular people getting tricked into believing fake news, and how their friends and loved ones help them become more aware. Steuter chose the graphic novel format because it is more engaging than a traditional book, and allows readers to easily identify with the diverse characters and learn alongside them. According to Steuter, the best way to protect ourselves from fake news is to learn how to check the facts—and the motivations of the people presenting them—before hitting the share button.

Won't Get Fooled Again: A Graphic Guide to Fake News is published by and available now from Between The Lines.
