Mount Allison’s Zine Library
The Zine Library is here!
what exactly is a zine?
It’s a micro-magazine that anyone can make and fill with whatever content they choose: poetry, creative writing, collages, photographs, drawings, comics, tips on how to make or do things, or even political statements. In its simplest form, a zine is made from any type of paper you have to hand and folded to create a small booklet for the content. It can also be more complex in that it might be multi-paged, formally printed, include pockets or little pop-ups inside, and be assembled in unique ways. Whatever their size, simplicity, or complexity, zines are meant to be reproduced and shared—which is why you often find them in public spaces.
This year students in our community engaged learning program…
worked with junior students at Port Elgin Regional, Dorchester Consolidated, and North and South Esk Elementary schools on a zine-making project. We conceived this collaboration as a means of continuing our community-supported education work at a time when coronavirus protocols (and distance) prevented us from regularly visiting the schools. But we also wanted to introduce and foster zine-making as a form of self-expression for younger students. Small groups of students met online weekly (or, when possible, at the school) to engage in zine-making with delightful results. Please browse through our collection and enjoy the fruits of this collaboration. If you feel inclined, you’re welcome to download, print, and fold copies of the zines that most appeal to you!
